Hemidiaphragmatic paresis after cervical herpes zoster.

چکیده
Herpes zoster generally affects sensory nerves, but occasionally motor nerves also are affected,'2 so that flaccid muscle paresis develops in the segments corresponding to the dermatomes in which cutaneous lesions appear. The site of the lesion in the motor neurone is not clear, but the absence of electromyographic fasciculations and slow motor conduction velocity point to motor axon damage. Postherpetic paresis of the diaphragm has been reported in rare instances.34 In the present case it developed on the left side after ipsilateral cervical herpes zoster, with the electromyographic signs of neurogenic paresis of other muscles in the same segments.

Hemidiaphragmatic paralysis: a rare complication of cervical herpes zoster.
Herpes zoster, a sequel of the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, usually presents with cutaneous eruptions associated with intense pain and burning sensation in the affected dermatomes. Motor weakness, however, can sometimes complicate herpes zoster. In this report we present a case that had diaphragmatic motor weakness as a sequel of herpes zoster lesions in the neck.
متن کاملZoster-associated segmental paresis in a patient with cervical spinal stenosis.
Segmental zoster paresis is a rare complication of herpes zoster, characterized by focal motor weakness that does not always present simultaneously with skin lesions. Zoster paresis can be easily confused with other neuromuscular or spinal diseases. This case report describes the case of a 72-year-old woman with herpes zoster and cervical spinal stenosis at the same spinal level, where it was d...
متن کاملHerpes zoster and its neurological complications.
Ninety-three Chinese patients with cutaneous herpes zoster were seen during a 4-year period. Thoracic zoster occurred most commonly, followed by ophthalmic, cervical and lumbosacral zoster. Neurological complications were present in eleven patients (11.8%), the commonest being Ramsay-Hunt syndrome and segmental limb paresis. The clinical picture, pathogenesis, treatment and outcome of segmental...
متن کامل[Herpes radiculopathy case presenting first with motor involvement].
Herpes zoster primarily affects the posterior root ganglions and sensorial nerve fibers, and causes vesicular skin eruptions, radicular pain and loss of sensorial function along the distribution of the affected ganglion. Motor involvement can also be observed. When classical cutaneous lesions are present, the motor paresis consequent to herpes zoster is easily diagnosed. However, diagnosis beco...
متن کاملVaricella-zoster virus reactivation from multiple ganglia: a case report
INTRODUCTION Simultaneous involvements of multiple cranial nerve ganglia (geniculate ganglion and peripheral ganglia of cranial nerves VIII, IX and X) by varicella-zoster virus and its subsequent activation may result in the characteristic eruptions of herpes zoster cephalicus. Coexistence of facial palsy and involvement of upper cervical dermatomes by varicella-zoster virus is quite rare. CA...
